About this game

The classic block-stacking puzzle game is here! Play the original Tetris and see how high of a score you can get. Create a full row of blocks to clear up the row, and don't let the tetrominoes (blocks) overfill to the top!

How to Play Tetris

When you start a game of Tetris for the first time, you can select a level one through nine. The higher the level, the more random the tetrominoes are and the faster the game progresses. If you're playing Tetris for the first time or want the original experience, try starting on the first level.

In a round of Tetris, the aim is to get the highest score possible. Earning points are achieved by clearing Tetris block lines to make space for more. The game is over when the board overflows with blocks and there's no space left.

Tetrominoes will start individually falling. Move them left and right with the arrow keys, or swipe if you're playing on mobile. Rotate blocks using the up arrow key, or swipe up. You can make a block fall faster by pressing and holding the down arrow key, or swiping down.

Tetris Tips

Struggling to play Tetris? You're not alone. We compiled a list of some of the best tips and tricks to help you improve at Tetris!

First off, remember to rotate the blocks! This might seem self-explanatory but sometimes blocks can fit much better when they are spun around. You can also spin blocks around just as they hit the bottom so you can fit them into tight spaces.

Second, keep the stack as flat as possible! Avoid creating holes as this will make it much harder to place blocks later on. Avoid creating jagged or staircase-like arrangements as well, since this will also increase the difficulty later on. Remember, always think about how each piece will affect future placements!

Lastly, keep watch for the next piece. You can tell which piece is going to be next because it's in the box in the top-right corner. By keeping track of what pieces go next you can strategically choose where to place your current piece to make space for the next one.

History of Tetris

Tetris was made in 1984 by Alexey Pajitov, a Soviet computer scientist. He was inspired by pentomino puzzles but found them too complex. Instead, he made the Tetrominoes only have four blocks instead.

In 1986, Tetris was ported to IBM PC's by Vadim Gerasimov and it was introduced to America. The rights were sold to Nintendo and Tetris became bundled with the Game Boy.

Following the Soviet Union collapse, the rights returned to Alexey Pajitov in 1996 who founded the Tetris company.
