But Flappy Bird wasn't an instant success. When it first came out, it was heavily criticized by the game critics. They stated that the game was too difficult or that the art style was too similar to other games. However, the game received a massive popularity spike in January 2014 and became the #1 most installed app on the App Store!
At the peak of the game's success, the developer Dong Nguyen was earning up to $50,000 a day through advertisements alone! That means that in a month alone he would have close to two million dollars! Flappy Bird went on to receive a spinoff and even a coin-operated physical arcade game, bringing in even more money for Nguyen.
Sadly, not every story gets a fairy tale ending. Nguyen originally made the game to be fun in short bursts and provided a pastime. Sadly, he noticed that many people were extremely addicted to the game and never stopped playing, affecting their mental health and well-being. Nguyen felt extremely guilty that a product he made was causing so much harm, so he decided to do something against it.
It was February 8th, 2014 when Ngyuen made the announcement that he would be pulling the game from both the Google Play Store and the App Store. A day later, the game disappeared from the stores and was never made available again (until now!)
Some people speculated that the game may have been removed due to legal issues and that the game's artwork looks too similar to Mario, but Nguyen denied that this was true.
